What kind of water should I wash something like cotton / knit clothing in to shrink it?

Hot water is best.....and dry on high heat.........If this does not work, find a friend with a sewing machine and get them to take a tiny seam right alo ng the seam...What kind of water should I wash something like cotton / knit clothing in to shrink it?
wash them in cold water, the shrinking process starts in the dryer.Let the item stay in the dryer longer than needed.
I disagree with the first answer - shrinking happens in HOT water. Then put in a hot dryer to dry them.
