Can you use water to wash off oil paints?

i have heard you have to use mineral but can you use water? Can you use water to wash off oil paints?
mineral spirits (ms) for most purposes.

For skin ms works but baby oil is kinder to your skin...you may have to rub a bit.

ms for brushes and follow up with dove dish soap and water then a conditioner (like you would use on your hair) before you store them. Can you use water to wash off oil paints?
well, if you are trying to remove dried oils from brushes then you'll need to soak them in turpentine or mineral spirits maybe for several days. if you wish to remove dried paint from a surface you can use turpentine or mineral spirits on a rag or q-tip for finer work.

if they are wet you can use dish detergent like dawn and warm water though you'll need to treat the brushes with baby oil or linseed oil to keep them in good condition after cleaning. you can remove wet oil paint with baby oil or linseed oil but it takes alot of oil.

water, on its own will not clean wet or dry oil paint from any surface. it simply isn't caustic enough.

good luck with your project...
No, water won't remove oil paint. If you don't want to use mineral spirits, try ';The Masters'; Hand Soap- it works better than anything I've ever tried before. Most artist's supply stores have it, it comes in an old-fashioned looking wrapper.
Water will only make it messier since water isn't a solvent for oil. Use mineral spirits, turpentine or paint thinner instead. In a pinch gasoline will work but may damage the finish, the skin or whatever you use it on.
Hi,

Supposing that your oil paints are not waterbased :

Clean them with turps ( a cheaper one) and then after well cleaned, namely the ferrule (I guess that's the name in english), wash them with soap and water.

There are conditioning soaps for brushes that you may use once in a while.

Sometimes, after cleaning with turps and then soap, I pass them through hair conditioner. But that's one in a while.

Kind regards,

Jos茅
