Peter N is right. Filter media (Commonly a bed of sand) gets progressively filled with fine particulates, which eventually accumulate enough to plug the filter. Then you have to flow air or water in the other direction (Backwash) to restore flow. This backwash water (Full of fines) has to be disposed of separately, or it'll just clog the filter again. What is the meaning of 'Back Wash Water' in a water treatment Process Plant ?
This is the water that was used to backflush the filter to unplug the filter .
